The day’s over. Too busy to even think about it, till done past. She’s long, long gone, almost thirty years. Born June 23, 1902 in Celina, Texas: my maternal grandmother. Great memories of her. Tonight I started reading The Year of Magical Thinking. Let’s try to savor the ordinary instants. Let’s try.

Among the posts on this blog will be the series Diary of a Start-up that chronicles my experiences in forming a digital publishing venture.

Watch for specifics about the new company, our strategy, and the role we’re seeking to establish in niche publishing.Essentially, it’s a two person start-up. Self-funded. Flexible.

My roles include technology & marketing. My partner handles content. Together we craft strategies for moving forward.

We’re not aiming to dominate the world, but simply to offer products that enhance your experience of the world around you.

Settling down with a good read

January 22nd, 2011 § 0 comments

At some point in 2010 I stopped reading. Rather, i should say that I stopped reading printed books. There was no dramatic changeover from print to digital. No fiery day when I proclaimed my conversion. It just happened.

The iPod Touch changed everything for me. (And you thought it would be a Kindle or iPad?) Of course, a book is an incredible mobile device – the ultimate, some might say – but I no longer seek out print. And I’m not wading into the religious wars as to which mobile device is better for reading (if any). People are free to have their preferences, even if it’s still print.

But for this life-long lover of books and former librarian, settling down with a good read is no longer about plucking a volume from the shelf. And while I can bring my laptop or netbook to the giant leather chair, those portable machines don’t do it for me when it comes to reading. Actually, last year I did read an entire book in PDF on a netbook and it was an okay experience but I never got around to reading much more despite having a large store of reading material on the netbook. Yet, that more intimate nature of the small screen changed my reading habit. (And no keyboard or clam shell case to get in the way helped.) Now, I’m back to reading more. And I’m happy about that.
